IcePass – paving the way for an enhanced

integration of electric systems in novel aircrafts.

SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

In the framework of the Clean Sky 2 LPA program, the IcePass project develops and provides key elements to the Ground Base Demonstrator (GBD) of the High Lift Flow Control (HLFC) wing (HLFC-WIN project).

On the one hand, the project deals with the development, manufacturing and installation in the GBD of the electrical lines that power and monitor the Ice Protection System (IPS) of the Leading Edge. On the other, the project carries out the design, manufacturing and installation of a full electric actuation system that is able to deploy and retract the Krueger Flap of the HLFC-WIN demonstrator.

IMPACT

The final goal of the IcePass project is to pave the way for an enhanced integration of electric systems in novel aircrafts. It seeks to offer a reliable, compact, fully electric alternative to the current actuation systems based on hydraulic forces.

At the same time, IcePass concepts for electric distribution contributes to alleviate the lack of space in typical aerostructures, such as the leading edge of the HLFC-WIN demonstrator.

All in all, IcePass seeks to reduce some of the technological and industrialization risks associated with in the introduction in the market of a new generation of greener and electrical aircrafts in the years to come.

INNOVATION

IcePass brings innovation through the way electricity is distributed across the aircraft wing. This is based on tailor-made 3D printed raceways, that replace traditional harnesses, and the introduction of slip-rings, a COTS element that allows to electrically connect movable elements without the need for additional cable slack.

But over about that, IcePass project is a proof of concept of a fully electrically actuation system for moving an aerodynamic surface, in particular, the Krueger Flap high lift device of the HLFC-WIN demonstrator.

VENTURE

Adática Engineering S.L. is the sole project member of the IcePass project. Its responsible of the execution and implementation of the whole project, from the design phase to the installation phase in the demonstrator,

With more than 15 years of track-record in the design and manufacturing of systems and structural components for the aerospace industry, Adática is able to successfully carry out all the phases of a complex innovation project such as IcePass.

FUNDING

This project has received funding from the Clean Sky 2 Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No 886985.

The JU receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the Clean Sky 2 JU members other than the Union
